Holiday Spirit

I can’t believe the calendar today!

I admit I am a little behind this year, the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us and I am still in denial. I am although enjoying the closeness that the Holidays bring. Making plans to see friends that you haven’t seen in far too long, planning family events and preparing for new and old traditions. These are the moments you remember when you grow up and have families of your own. For me that included watching Little Woman with my mom and sisters during that first big snow fall, decorating the Christmas tree (while my parents bickered about the lights being just so), driving around looking at Christmas decorations with a box of chocolates and my Dad singing The First Noel by the Crash Test Dummies, and of course having at least one soak in the hot tub with the family while snow lightly falls.

Surprisingly enough the moments I remember are not surrounded by gifts, and I would be hard pressed to remember most of the items given to me throughout the years. Instead I cherish those special moments, the memories with family and friends, and of course, the time with those no longer here.

A strange way to start this blog which is supposed to be about our Holiday shopping party…

When we all sat in a room to discuss our upcoming event, we didn’t even discuss items that were going to be on sale, but the fact we want our store to smell of the “holidays”, that we want to offer a hot drink to warm a cold day, and to have treats to sweeten up your day. We are excited to see our customers come into the store, and share a few moments with us so we can show our appreciation for your ongoing business. Yes, there will be a sale!  We hope you take the opportunity to save on some of your favorite items, or buy something special for your loved ones. Most importantly, we hope you have a special Holiday season and that we get the chance to wish you a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Come join us on December 6th and 7th,

We look forward to seeing you!

Liana

I know I am probably missing someone! So, if I missed you THANK YOU!

The staff here at HHL is looking forward to some much needed time off with our families after the busy Summer Season.  I know I am most looking forward to having some quality time with family, creating memories that I am sure we will share in years to come, and most likely eating far too much! Bring on the stretchy pants!! Family and Friends is what makes time off so valuable, so I look forward to sharing those special moments with those who have a special place in my heart!

Kristi Huestis- “I am looking forward to getting together with family and friends and eating a lot of Turkey!”

Debby vandenHof-“I am looking forward to Turkey, stuffing and all of the trimmings, even though I am a confessed foodie however this simple meal is one of my favorite meals of the year! I actually enjoy Thanksgiving more than Christmas because the focus is on family and food without  the crazy shopping that Christmas brings.”

Megan Banman-“When I think about Thanksgiving three things come to mind,  how blessed I am with the family I have, that all my needs are provided for, and of course the food I will be consuming on that day. Being married the never ending questions of your parents or mine? And which day? I am sure is something a lot of people can relate to. In my family I am happy to say my husband’s family and my family have Thanksgiving together. I am thankful that we can get together as an extended family to consume an amazing meal and enjoy being a family. This year my in-laws are hosting and I can already smell the turkey cooking and thoughts of carrot cake and chocolate pie are on my mind.”

We wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving from our families to yours!

A letter to fellow business owners from HHL

 August 5, 2013

I want to begin by thanking you, our fellow business owners, for sharing our commitment to making the Annapolis Valley a great place to live. Many of you are volunteers for local clubs and organizations and we realize it is a challenge to run a business and still find time to volunteer. No matter how busy life becomes, it is always important to take time to think of others in need. Great job everyone!

Holland Home Leisure will be holding an auction fundraising event for Splash for CF on October 2tth, 2013. Splash for CF provides assistance to families with children suffering with Cystic Fibrosis, as well as adults who are continuing their fight with the horrible disease. All of the funds raised from this event will be used to support Splash for CF and the fight against Cystic Fibrosis.

We hope that you will partner with us in helping to make this event a huge success. We're in the process of collecting merchandise for the event from respected companies in the area such as yours, and I'm writing to request your assistance. By donating an item or gift certificate, you'll be making a tax deductible contribution that will help Splash for CF continue to help make life better for individuals in need.

Additionally, you'll benefit from exposure of your company's name to those who attend the event. Donors will be listed on the event program, and the merchandise you give will be on display throughout the event. If you are unable to provide an item to auction but you would like to support the event, we encourage you to purchase a ticket to attend the auction and enjoy an evening of fun as well as a five course meal designed by Chef Dave Smart of Front and Central in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Tickets are limited so please inform us as soon as you can.

Please consider the opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of those suffering from Cystic Fibrosis and help support Splash for CF. During our 2011 season Holland Home Leisure hosted BBQ’s, bake sales, yard sales, sold raffle tickets and much more and we ended the season with raising over $10000 with your help! This year we hope to have just as much success!

I will be in contact shortly to discuss your donation opportunities and to secure your seat at the event, please call with any questions at 902-681-3030 or email me at liana@hollandhomeleisure.com or debby@hollandhomeleisure.com

Sincerely

Staff Party FUN

Wow, summer is flying by! I can not believe we are coming up on the first weekend in August... Can you?

Here are some HHL Updates:

This past weekend we had ouu HHL Summer Staff Party. This morning there were a lot of laughs recapping some of the most memorable moments. Mark and Andrea were very generous hosts, offering their beautiful back yard for the HHL team. A huge thank you to them for allowing us into their home and providing an evening full of fun, food, games and entertainment! Together with Mike and Debby they provided a delicious meal, complete with midnight pulled pork off the Big Green Egg.

We had an afternoon of games for the young and the young at heart, followed by a huge BBQ (YUMMY), and then a live concert by the Hupman Brothers just for us! The party went well into the night (or the next day…however you look at it) and a great time was had by everyone who attended. So thank you Mark, Andrea, Mike and Debby!

On to other news, our planning for the Splash for CF Dinner and Auction is coming along nicely. The event will be held on October 24th at Front and Central in Wolfville. Dave Smart, the head chef will be planning a Valley Harvest themed 5 course meal with lovely wine pairings for each course! We are so excited to be able to present this event to you for the second time. We have some amazing live and silent auction items being gathered from local business and artists. So keep a watch out in the store, and on our Facebook page for details on ticket availability!

Swim Suit Season- With The Swimwear Hut

Well, the weather hasn't been cooperating but it is almost time for “Swim Suit Season”!

Now I don’t know about you, but I personally love treating myself to a new swimsuit every Summer! I have developed quite a collection as well! I thought I would get in touch with the experts in the area and see what they had to say about the Summer Trends for 2013! I want to know what to look for when I go shopping!

Liz Huntley of The Swimwear Hut in New Minas gave me the inside scoop of what’s “IN” to get you beach ready this swimming season.

Question (Liana): What would you say is the biggest trend for 2013?

Answer (The Swimwear Hut):One of the most noticeable and biggest trends in fashionable swimwear for 2013 is the high-waisted bottom. This bottom is NEW, and great for any woman who wants more coverage than a bikini has to offer. It is a different look, not everyone loves it, but certainly worth a try when scoping out new styles for the summer.”

Question: What is a good option if you want to stand out in a crowd but still be “in style”?

Answer: “A few other hot looks for 2013 include “Ruffles” “Bling” and “Eye Catching Prints”. Ruffles appear on tops, bikini bottoms, one-piece swimsuits, and cover-ups, giving your suit a very feminine twist. Add in the Bling and you’re in style! And in 2013, there is certainly a great array of print swimwear to choose from including sea inspired motifs to animal inspired prints. The crazier the print, the better! Bright and Bold styles are becoming the new black.”

Question: What about for the men?

Answer: There is a lot for the guys too! from different inseam lengths and fabrics, solid colours to colourful prints it is ALL here, it is best to take the time to try on the different styles to see what best suits YOUR body type!

Question: What other must have items do you carry?

Answer: “Cover ups, hats, beach bags, towels, jewelry, sandals and so much more are becoming part of every day wear at the Beach! So after you have purchased your amazing new pool and hot tub, or if you are getting ready for the Beach come in and visit us at The Swimwear Hut!

A huge thank you to Liz at The Swimwear Hut for giving us some swimwear pointers! Everyone  should take a trip out to New Minas and visit them for exceptional selection (Sizes 0-5XL) and amazing service!

Come on Over Rover!

Two years ago Mike brought home a machine that looked like my miniature Volkswagen, needless to say I fell in love on site, before I even knew what this adorable little critter did to earn its keep! Once seeing the P93 chug along the bottom of the pool and climb up the stairs, flip over on its back and go back down to the bottom of the pool again we knew he was a keeper. The family decided this awesome creature whose job it was to pick up all the debris on the bottom of our pool for us deserved a name!

Polaris P93 AKA-Rover

We welcomed Rover into our family in 2011, this was the name chosen by our granddaughter! The only problem with identifying our P93 as Rover is every time I tell a customer about how awesome Rover is I have to remind myself of it’s proper name! Some products are just like that, I remember parting with my old Volvo who I had fondly n nicknamed Emma Lou. It was a sad day when Emma Lou was no longer part of my daily commute!

I know Mike is in love with his Big Green Egg but I haven’t heard him call it eggy or any other pet name but I think maybe he does this in secret…

I would love to hear the pet names that you have for your most treasured possessions.

HHL gets their groove on!

Have you heard the saying “Those who play together stay together.”?

Holland Home Leisure believes this theory to be true! Recently, a few (unnamed) HHL team members were casually having a mid-afternoon happy dance which is completely normal around here. The conversation quickly turned to the very popular “Harlem Shake” and how it would be hilarious if HHL were to participate in this fad. What turned out to be a joke has turned into a reality.

Mass emails were produced encouraging staff members and their families to join and soon the date was set. As we gathered after work on a Saturday afternoon, I looked around and realized… this is rare. Most times people run for the door on a Saturday after the store is closed. I too have made the mad dash… but on this day I was excited to see smiling, laughing, ridiculous costumes, and what had turned into a wonderful team building experience!
I had to try on the Cow Costume!

"Every person has their strengths and has their weaknesses, and the best teams need a good mix of people. Although I wanted to be front and center (ummmm….sure) it was very quickly decided that my “Best” was to be behind a camera! The team did a great job, and since they wouldn’t let me be in the video, I snuck my drone into the video for about 2 seconds to make an appearance! Great job everyone!"- Mark VanZoost

Yesterday as we gathered for our annual staff training day our finished video started our morning. I couldn’t think of a better way to get excited about a day of team building and learning  than seeing our very own Harlem Shake. You may think…What does the Harlem Shake have to do with Holland Home Leisure?

The answer is simple: FUN

We sell you fun…we are here to help you create memories in your very own backyard! To do this, and to give you our very best everyday, we need to work as a team, have fun as a team, learn as a team, and PLAY as a team!

We are excited to welcome you into Holland Home Leisure sometime soon!

We may even do a little dance for you,

Water Care Expert!

Can you believe we are putting Pool Opening kits on the shelf? It is hard to imagine swimming when we are still receiving (more than) our yearly dose of snow! Pool accessories are being organized, the parts room is being stocked and we are all preparing ourselves for the pool opening rush.

On April 2nd, we will be closed in both locations (Aylesford and New Minas) for our annual Chemistry Training day. Every year our staff gathers to have a refresher on pool maintenance, troubleshooting and chemistry. (Doing this keeps us all on our toes for when you come in each spring with your pool and hot tub related chemistry questions.)

Jenn Kendall-McGrath

Also, in our New Minas location we have Jenn Kendall-McGrath our Water Care Division Manager, and she is here to help with all of your water woes.  Jenn, who has been on staff at Holland Home Leisure for 12 years, is our on site Water Care Specialist. She is happy to help find you the perfect hot tub or pool maintenance system that is going to suit your needs and lifestyle! Are you a hot tub owner who is busy and on the go? Ask her about Mineraluxe!

Did you know that we can conduct up to 13 tests for things in your pool and spa water? Our in store testing (done in both locations) is a complimentary service to all of our chemistry customers, so feel free to bring us in a 1L sample anytime you have questions or concerns! Sit back, relax, and enjoy a complimentary coffee or tea while we test your water, and then get your personalized results explained to you by one of our Water Care Specialists.

We hope to see you all soon,

First Time Blogger!

As my first blog post, I decided that I would use a letter that I recently wrote for our Backyard Escapes magazine which is being printed right now, and will be circulating very shortly! Blogging is entirely new to me, but I think that it may prove to be fun! We have some exciting things happening at Holland Home Leisure, and as plans unfold, I will be sure to share in future Blog posts!

Here goes nothing…

Andrea and I became Holland Home Leisure customer’s 5-years ago, and have been transforming our backyard into our own All-Inclusive, fully embracing the concept of Vacation-at-Home.  Our passion for backyard living has taken both of our careers in a new direction, and we are thoroughly delighted to have joined the Holland Home Leisure team!

In my previous career, I would generally get home around 6:45PM, and the summer months were always the best!  My evenings generally seemed to go one of two ways….I would either come home to a pool full of kids, or I would come home to immediately hear “will you come swimming with us?”  For those of you that have a pool, I expect you know exactly what I’m talking about…..for those that do not have a pool, I can assure you that it is an incredibly rewarding feeling!  Bonding with your kids seems to go at a different speed when you’re in a pool, and the memories are ones that really will last a life time!  Do you remember where you used to swim as a child? I do!

What type of pool? What about the deck? Is a hot tub in the cards?  All questions that come to mind when considering a new backyard.  It can seem overwhelming, or like one of the most enjoyable puzzles you’ll ever complete!  For me, what a great puzzle!  When we began thinking about our new backyard, the consensus view from the spectators was that there was no way I would have enough room to put in a pool.  The final result (of that phase) was that we installed a 15x30 above ground pool, with 20 feet of deck at one end of the pool. The puzzle pieces fit!  Going into our 7th backyard season at our home, every year we take on new projects, and I’m pretty sure we’re almost done..... 25 years of annual projects left to go!  As you start to think about what your dream backyard is, come into our store, share your vision, and we’ll do everything we can to help make it a reality.

To our existing customers, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your business, and you have my commitment that we will continue to do everything we can to ensure you get the most out of your backyard, and I hope you have another wonderful season!

Have you Booked your Pool Opening Yet?

It is hard to believe but it is officially Spring today! (Looks like it out there, doesn’t it?) We have actually been in Spring mode at HHL since the beginning of February! Why you might ask? Our Service Department has been prepping to make sure we are prepared to open your pool and to make it easier for you to book service calls.

As the Service Advisor, I am actually the one who schedules all of our service crews. Pool opening bookings have started to pour in so now is the time to book yours! We will be starting the week of April 22nd which is only one month away. Of course, it is hard to believe with the winter weather hitting us this week!

Are you looking for a much easier and stress-free way to book your pool opening this year? Just email me at kristi@hollandhomeleisure.com and I will be happy to assist. You can call either store location and talk to the staff, or be asked to be put directly through to my phone. I am still only working limited hours but you can always leave me a voice mail and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am not sure I am looking forward to giving up my Fall/Winter hours just yet, but before you know it, I will be here at 7:00 am! (So EARLY!)

If you would like to talk to me in person, I’m located in the Aylesford store. For those who don’t realize I hide in the back office!

Hope to hear from you soon!

New Products 2013

Last week we had a few warm days, and then we were quickly reminded it is still winter here in Nova Scotia. BRRRR! We are all anxious to break out the spring clothes and not be bundled in everything we own while walking the kids to the bus stop. Patience, the nice weather will come…eventually! (Ok, so maybe I’m not very patient)

Maybe you can warm up with some fresh baked pizza from our brand new Pizza Ovens!

Spring is a busy time of year here at Holland Home Leisure. We are currently organizing the floor with brand new patio furniture, stocking the shelves with all of the necessary pool chemicals and accessories, and prepping for all of your chemistry questions.

We are excited to show you some fun new products for 2013. So make sure you stop by and check them out!

Mark and Andrea- A welcome...and a warning!

2013 brings a year of change for HHL. Mike and Debby vandenHof have joined forces with new partners Mark and Andrea VanZoost, and since January 1st they have been working hard at learning the ins and outs of the business. Not only are they learning product knowledge and chemistry, they are learning about how things run on a daily basis.

I wanted to take this opportunity to warn them for what they are in for… and wish them luck for the busy season which is coming soon!

1.       Beware of the Victoria Day Weekend Sale! Yes, we’ve told you it will be busy, but you will not understand HOW busy until you have experienced it first hand. This weekend can be fun, overwhelming, and a great way to get to meet our awesome customers  so wear comfortable shoes, bring food you can eat on the run, and don’t drink too much water as your bathroom breaks will be limited. (P.S. If you make it through these 3 days…you can make it through anything.)

2.       Products: Everywhere you look in HHL is a product (big or small), 1000’s of products that at some point you will know something about. All of that product information will most likely take over your brain, and don’t be surprised if it may push out some of the old (possibly useful) information you once have had. Your dreams will now be taken over by plumbing pieces, water tests, chemicals, and furniture sets.

3.       The Staff: You are joining a team, a family even… and with that comes many years of experience and opinions. We are happy to help you learn about o-rings, chemistry and the endless fabric choices for furniture, but we may take some encouraging and reassuring when you decide to change how our world works! We like to have fun, laugh, and remember…. we can easily be bribed with food.

“Andrea and Mark, I am so excited for the opportunity to learn from both of you! Your enthusiasm is contagious and I see myself benefiting greatly from your arrival. Welcome to the HHL family, and I look forward to all that is to come in 2013!”- Liana vandenHof-Rhodenizer, Manager, Hot Tub and Furniture Divisions

“Andrea and Mark, welcome to the HHL Team, it’s going to be an awesome summer. Your enthusiasm is exciting and as Liana said ‘contagious’.” –Anne Hale, General Manager, Lifestyles Plaza

“I am very excited to have fresh faces in the Holland Home Leisure family! Welcome to the team Andrea and Mark. Your eagerness and approach to learning is encouraging us to ‘move our cheese’.”- Jennifer Kendall McGrath, Chemistry Manager

I'm Back!

Do you know that feeling when you see someone you are close with, but don’t have the opportunity to see often,  and it feels like you just saw them yesterday?

That is how I feel! Wow, I was gone for 14 months on maternity leave, where did that time go? Strangely, I still remember how to do a water test with out even really thinking about it, I remember the code for a Beachcomber filter with out looking, and my office still feels like home!

I was interested to see how things had changed while I was gone. I was worried that I would feel like the odd one out since so much time has passed. There are new products, new management (since I’ve been gone), new partners, and the clock is in a new place. Guess what I’m having the hardest time adjusting to? You guessed it, the clock!

I am excited to work along side some wonderful people who welcomed me back with open arms, and I have been having a blast getting to know the new members of the HHL team. The HHL family has grown, and with that comes fresh new ideas on how to serve you better.

We are in the process of planning a great spring/summer season so keep an eye out for fun updates on our Facebook page, charity events, and our blog! If you are unfamiliar with the blog please take a few minutes to read through some posts from the past years.

I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces in the upcoming season, and I am excited to welcoming you back into the store sometime soon.
